The Small Schools Writers Day is part of the Jugiong Writers Festival and is an opportunity for all students to celebrate and foster a love of literacy. They will work first hand with noted authors, a cartoonist and illustrators and develop skills in writing, reading, storytelling and creative arts.

The 5 Workshops include:

  • “ Develop your Creative Writing with Phil Kettle” noted children’s author. All students will have read some of Phil’s “Too Cool” books previously and created and published their own adventure story using the main characters to be entered into the Jugiong Writers Festival Short Story competition.
  •  “The Chinese Connection” In this workshops Arthur (Penny) Charles – author of the Poucher and Big Guy series and Kate Anderson – illustrator will help the children create their own “Small book of Big Ideas” using Poucher’s book on China as a stimulus incorporating Chinese art with Kate.  Big Guy (Penny Charles ) is sending some copies of his Poucher and Big Guy in China book so each school can read it to their students prior to the workshop so that students have an understanding of Chinese culture.
  •  “Create Your Own Cartoons with Brian Allen”- Cartoonist/ Artist creating your own cartoons/art works  learning techniques and exploring the use of subject and light.
  •   “Love it or Leave it”- (senior students) exploring opening paragraphs; Which books do you like to read? Why? What “hooks” do writers use to entice their readers to read on? Creating your own exciting opening paragraphs.
  •  “Bring your story to life”  (Juniors). “Story in a bag” /Improvisation Readers theatre/ reading a story/ re-enacting using dress ups.
  •  “Mosaic Madness with Joan Simpson”- Learn techniques to Create your own mosaic cover for your too cool writing folder.
